Final Friday

CityArts is hosting the opening of four new exhibits from 6-8 p.m. on Final Friday, May 27 that celebrate the work of artists in the Wichita area. Admission is free to CityArts’ galleries that are open 9 a.m.-9 p.m., Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Saturday. The shows will be on display through June 18. CityArts is located at 334 N. Mead in Old Town Square.

Main Gallery: "From Sketch to Story," works by Debbie Wagner
"From Sketch to Story" advocates the strength of the visual story. Wagner's journey as a narrative artist constantly shifts. As she has allowed her pieces to take on a more abstract style, her stories begin to unfold in unexpected directions. A soul-searching freedom begins in the bravery of baring the internal story. She began daily plein air paintings of the Kansas sunrise in 2002, a practice she continues today.

Boardroom Gallery: "Intuition: Paintscapes and Abstract Designs," works by Holley Schmidlapp
This body of work represents the process of scraping layers of paint, followed by the addition of more paint, and then repeating the process to reveal patterns in a free and spontaneous fashion. "I've always had a liking for bright colors and unique design work," Schmidlapp said. "When asked where I get my inspiration from, I have to say, I just let the paint decide wherever it wants to go and try not to control it."

Main Hall Gallery: "Untaming the Ordinary," works by Kylie Millward
Newly-based Wichita illustrator Kylie Millward presents "Untaming the Ordinary." Millward will exhibit a body of work depicting mostly anthropomorphized creatures and objects used to construct fantastical narrations. Millward's exhibition will also be introducing her newest summer-inspired series, "Sweet Treats." Her work is inspired by German expressionism, folk art and stop-motion animation.
