Artist Q&A: Matt Miller

Death Bag Blues Miller, Matthew.jpg

How did you find out about this exhibition?
I have known about this exhibition for several years now since I started working toward my fine art degree at Fort Hays State in Hays.

How did you decide which pieces of work to submit?
The paintings I submitted are a combination of landscape and studio work over the last couple years.

Why did you want to participate in this exhibition?
I was part of the show last fall, and wanted to be part of the exhibition this year because the gallery spaces at CityArts are a nice showcase for artists of our region.

What inspired these pieces of work?
I often like to combine ideas that arise when I'm painting outdoors with my own photographic reference. When working in the studio, I'm able to draw upon my memory and daydreams.  I feel the more personal my approach to the imagery, the more open the paintings are to all.

What message/ meaning do you hope to convey?
These paintings capture the shifting and surging impulses of nature, and represent an expression of our everyday relationships with the landscape through creative equilibrium of color.

Overall, my works are manifestations of my wandering spirit and desire to explore and imagine places in my own spaces where art and life merge as one.
